Match Report

WMA Barnsley 0:1 Evesham

It was a dry but windy morning for us to welcome Evesham to our home pitch which was not the best surface to play on after recent weather. We started well and looked awake for once pressing Evesham high but they came back with a long shot from the edge of the box which Ryan saved comfortably. On 7 minutes we counter attacked at pace with Zak out to Cam on the right wing who whipped in a great cross but just too high for Mogs who could only head past the far post. Evesham had a long free kick but apart from that there were very few chances. The game was getting more even now and then Evesham got on top coming up to the end of the quarter bombarding us with balls over the top. But the defence were superb and held firm to go in level at 0:0.

We didn't make any subs as the team were competing well and still in the game after Q1 so went out for more of the same. Evesham were pressing more as we were struggling to hold the ball further up field so it kept coming back at us. But the defence were still battling hard to keep Evesham at bay. Halfway through the quarter we made some subs and changed things round a little. For the remainder of the quarter, there were still only long free kicks floated on the wind into the danger area. One for Evesham which Charlie Barrett just missed getting on the end of and two for us which came to nothing. Evesham's defence were also looking solid with Dan and Reece playing well. And that was all the clear action there was. Lots of hustle in the midfield but the conditions were making it difficult to play on the deck and the wind made it difficult in the air. Halftime and still all square.

Quarter three started in the same way with Evesham having another long free kick but then we had a good break with Ceats to Eliot on the right wing whose shot was saved at the near post by Dom in the Evesham goal. On six minutes we had another free kick and the ball dropped to Charlie but as he swivelled the shot round it went over the bar. Halfway through and we started to put pressure on with a shot from Cam over the bar and Eliot raiding down the right but the wind also took the cross over the bar. We had two more half chances from Cam, a free kick which was spilled and a long shot over the bar. It looked like it was going to end all level again but on 19 minutes we made a mistake at the back and Evesham broke free two on one. Lucas was on it in a flash and before he was closed down smashed the ball over Ryan's head for Evesham to lead 0:1 at the end of Q3.

We had it all to do now in a very close game dominated by the conditions. We knew we'd have to go more on the attack but Evesham were looking strong at the back. We showed good battling but poor quality in possession with missed passes and poor touch mainly due to the uneven pitch. And then it all kicked off with an injury to Charlie for Evesham, play continued and both players and coaches had to calm things down for the restart in play. Tensions were running high as the game was so close and although we pushed on, we couldn't quite create clear chances to draw level. Evesham were still looking strong and broke through but Ryan was quick and brave off his line to intercept. But that was the final score 0:1 to Evesham although there was little between the teams. Overall we battled well but didn't create enough and Evesham were strong all over the park.
