It was a sunny morning for what could be our last game and after a lot of rain pitch 6 was very soft and not very flat. We were missing our Captain out for a few weeks but still had a strong squad. We had some tough selection decisions after last week and who trained well as we knew Hereford would be very strong.
We made a good start to Q1 and were very much in the game. On seven minutes, Eliot crossed from the right and the ball found Josh who shot just over-a promising start. On eleven minutes, we had another break with Eliot out to Cam but his cross was too close to the Hereford keeper. Hereford then started to play some nice expansive football and stretch us in midfield and at the back. The rest of the quarter was quite close with few clear chances until right at the end. Right on 20 minutes, Hereford had a corner which was cleared away behind with both sides challenging. The linesman signalled for a goal kick but the ref pointed for another corner. We should have known with our luck as the ball was swung over to the back post where the Hereford player had lost his marker and had a free header to put them 0:1 up. Cruel on us at the end as we'd played so well but would have to go in behind now.
We had four subs and swapped them all in to rotate the game time around and knew we'd have to step it up in quarter two. But on three minutes we went two down after another piece of bad luck. Rio cleared the ball on the left but it took a deflection and rebounded straight back into the path of the Hereford striker who advanced and lifted it over Ryan. 0:2 down and we'd need some great play to get back into it now. Zak was working really hard up front pressing and on ten minutes had a good shot saved. For the remainder of the quarter the game was very even. We were working really hard and Hereford were playing the better football but we were keeping them at bay. Still few chances for either team and that's how the quarter ended.
Halftime and we would see what the boys could bring in the second half. For the first ten minutes we were playing well and holding our own against a strong Hereford. I didn't see much as I had to fish the ball out of the canal again along with Jason. On sixteen minutes Hereford had a good break on the right but shot wide. And that was the end of the quarter again-same pattern. Hereford playing well and we were battling to get back into the game.
And so on to the last quarter-could we break Hereford down and get a goal? We had our best chance on eight minutes. Dan lofted a high free kick from halfway into the box. The ball bobbled and Mogs got on the end of it but couldn't get over it as it bounced high and the keeper saved. Straight after there was controversy as the ref gave one of the Hereford players a straight red card for an elbow into the face of Cam. Nobody saw it as we were all suffering from Wenger Syndrome and were talking, looking away, making notes and "did not see anything." The ref tried to explain but the Hereford parents were incensed-clearly they didn't see it either. It sounds like all were following play but the ref saw it just as the players were running past him. Hereford's manager Matt made a lot of subs to rejig his formation to try to see out the game. We knew we'd have to push on now but the Hereford defence were still looking very strong with Callum outstanding. We also made subs on ten minutes to freshen things up. On eleven minutes we had a scare as we gave it away trying to play out from the back but Ryan came out and made a superb save to keep us in with a chance. All we needed was one goal to set up a charge. We had another long free kick and Phil rose well to win the header but glanced it wide. On 18 minutes, Eliot and Cam worked an opportunity for Alex in the box who'd broken from midfield but on the stretch his shot was saved by the keeper. And that was the end of the game with Hereford deservedly winning 0:2.
We played really well and worked extremely hard but ultimately Hereford were a very good team and we just couldn't get a goal to make a real game of it. Their two goals had elements of luck for them but they'd played some really smart football zipping it through midfield with Max and playing searching diagonals for their rapid forward Jack. They had a few chances but never tore us apart as our defence played really well. After a good few weeks and wins it was a disappointment to lose in our final game. But hopefully we get a chance in a few end of season friendlies for some more good performances as we're finding some decent form.
