WMA Barnsley 5:0 Birmingham City
On a very cold damp morning, we welcomed Birmingham to our better home pitch where we have a very good recent record. Unfortunately Dennis had been hit by players missing late so only just had 11. We needed to warm up well and start strong like the last few weeks but we couldn't do it. The first quarter was a very dour affair as we were somnambular, sitting deep, misplacing numerous passes and terrible touches. On two minutes we even missed a penalty after a trip in the box. Elijah blazed it over the bar but that wasn't the end of his penalty dramas. On seven minutes, Mogs played Max through who struck a good shot but the Birmingham keeper made a great save with his feet. We had some pressure and a couple of corners but nothing came of it. Later on Birmingham broke fast but Lewis managed to get back and block the shot. It looked like we were going in level but on 19 minutes we managed to break the deadlock. Joe, who had a great game, played a superb through ball into the path of Mogs who was looking bright and sharp. He took it in his stride and round the keeper then coolly slotted it into an empty net-1:0 after Q1.
The decision was taken not to make wholesale changes after a very poor first quarter and to give the boys another chance to put it right. We did score another on two minutes via another penalty. The ball was played in and bounced around and the Birmingham defender handballed it. Cam this time grabbed the ball and slotted it into the corner to make it 2:0. But overall the boys were still not firing on all cylinders so we made subs and gradually started to wake up. We were pressing more and putting on pressure with Josh making a big difference. He was making crosses and late on in the quarter he shifted the ball in the box and snapped a shot which the keeper managed to parry away. But no more goals so we went into half time leading 2:0. Birmingham hadn't given up so we knew we'd have to keep playing our football to get more goals.
So into Q3 and soon after we started we were making more subs in the middle of the game again. This seemed to break up the flow of play as we struggled to make a decisive impact at the Birmingham end. Ryan was playing well distributing with his feet and spraying the ball wide to the fullbacks and even made a Cruyff turn at one point to switch play! We huffed and puffed and had a few half chances but no more goals until the end of the quarter again when Birmingham were tiring. Josh broke strongly into the box yet again and was fouled for another penalty. This time with Cam off the pitch, Elijah stepped up again. He struck it on target this time but the Birmingham keeper dived to his right and made a good save. Unfortunately for him the ball bounced straight back to Elijah who took a touch and tapped it into the corner with the keeper on the floor. 3:0 to us at the end of quarter three.
And so into the fourth and final quarter. We tried a different formation as Birmingham were playing three at the back and overrunning us in the middle. We were bombing forward now at regular intervals as Birmingham were getting really tired with no subs. On nine minutes we managed to score again. Cam floated a lovely cross into the box from the right hand side and Joe arrived to flick the ball into the far corner to make it 4:0. But he still wasn't finished as he had a second assist to cap a fine performance from him. He found Elijah in the box who smashed the ball into the roof of the net for an eventful game for him with two missed penalties and two goals. That made the score 5:0 and the game was done. But there was still time for Alex to break from the back. He picked the ball up halfway inside his own half and drove forward with purpose then laid the ball out wide. He carried on into the box and picked up the ball from the cross and got a strong shot off on the run but the keeper made a good save. It would have made a great goal but overall he'd played superbly at the back marshalling the rest of the solid defence to give us another clean sheet.
Overall, we never quite hit top gear but kept battling throughout the whole game scoring in and winning every quarter. Great credit goes to Birmingham who kept battling and even played out the end of the game with only 10 players due to injury and no subs to replace. Not a great performance to end the first half of the season and go into the Christmas break but symptomatic of our endeavour, working hard and never giving up. A good rest now for coaches, boys and parents ready to start back fresh in the New Year.
