WMA V BIRMINGHAM CITY
A grey morning and tacky pitch for both sets of players at Gornal Athletics Garden Walk Stadium in this JPL Mids North league fixture.
P1 - The match commenced with both sets of players getting used to the pitch. WMA settled the quicker and looked to make use of wide areas and keeping the ball moving across the pitch and particularly through central areas. This stretched Blues and created pockets of space the likes of Josh, Louis and Woody could exploit. A well worked right sided move saw WMA progress through the thirds before Shevron drove into the right side of the Blues box before playing a ball across the six yard both where Woody had made ground on the left to loose the blues full back to tap in at the back post. 1-0 WMA. Birmingham looked for more possession in the WMA third and looked to unpick the back line with tight play and a series of crosses. However, as the half drew to a close Blues surrendered possession in their own third. The ball fell to Shevron who wonderfully half volleyed from a central area around 30 yards from goal to leave the GK with no chance to put WMA 2-0 on the final whistle of the quarter.
There was to be no more scoring however into P2 both sides had fair chances with Ethan going close for Blues and Shev, Woody and Josh going very close. WMA remained calm in possession and tried to play a mixture of short and long passing. Blues dug in and alway had a foot hold in the match without threatening hugely other than from good set piece deliveries and crosses from channel area's.
P3 - An even quarter with a lot of robust competition around the pitch, lots of second ball's to contend with. WMA looked like they could unlock the Blues back line with their pace and Blues enjoyed more time in and around the WMA penalty box but not able to break down the WMA defence. Free Kicks for both sides were well saved or just off target.
P4 - Birmingham pushed players higher up the pitch and looked to force their way back into the match. They looked to cause problems from swinging crosses from both sides which were either well defended or just headed over the bar. The clock ticked down and the match concluded in a final score of 2-0
Both sets of players played the game in the right manner whilst contesting fiercely. On a cold day hopefully the players efforts nd performances gave a good crowd an enjoyable morning. Good luck to Birmingham for the rest of their season
