Taunton Town U15 v Weston-Super-Mare U15
The fixture today marked the third meeting of the two sides having met in a previous Taunton hosted friendly and a Weston hosted friendly on their astro. Being heavy underfoot, Taunton had the advantage compared to the ease of play possible on Weston's astro but to watch Weston play, it was obvious the Taunton advantage might be just slight.
Q1: The first five minutes saw play evenly matched with both sides moving the ball and pressing forward, this then progressed into Taunton pressing play in the opponents half and a missed opportunity by Luke Margetts resulting in a rushed clearance by Weston. Steadying themselves Weston pushed back forcing a corner which was nicely cleared by Billy Bradbury out to the left wing to Luke Margetts to launch a Taunton counter, only for the whistle to end the quarter.
Score: 0 - 0
Q2. A change of positions for Taunton saw Luke Margetts move to a strike postion with Zach Sydenham being subbed and Calum Griffiths taking on the Left Wing-back role and Ali Alhusni moving to the left wing-back position. Full of confidence Taunton started well and once again pressed into the Weston half. Against run of play, Weston broke and some great work by the Weston No.9 drew the Taunton defence clearing a space for the Weston No 11 to receive a clever pass enabling him to ease the ball onto goal. A minor defensive error and Taunton were punished.
Undeterred Taunton from the commencement of play pressed again and immediately got a corner only for a fantastic Weston clea
rance to send the play into the Taunton half with a corner given. Pressure on, Weston struck, a great clearance by Charlie White and play was back in the Weston half. This was turning into a truely epic battle.
Half time score 0 -1
Q3. From the off, battle commence. Luke Margetts had a shot on goal going just wide of the target, followed by a Weston counter with a Weston attempt. Play was box to box, with pressure by Weston forcing a corner in the Taunton half. A great ball in, a fantastic header and the score was 0 -2. Once again, from the off Taunton applied the pressure. The game was still in reach and despite valiant effort Luke Margetts hit the bar and the post but still no joy. One final effort and he work paid off, rewarding Dan Thorne a tap-in. Score 1 - 2. Taunton back in the game.... well briefly. Battle commence and Weston not to be outdone replied with a goal just before the end of the third quarter bringing the deficit back to 2 goals.
Score: 1 - 3
Q4. Sensing blood Weston pressed. With all to play for, Taunton countered. Yet again Taunton attempts were thwarted and then came the killer blow, Weston scored their fourth. Normally at this point teams would concede that the game was lost. However resilience and fortitude shone through. A change of positions and a full frontal assault for a consolation goal or two was launched by Taunton only to be knocked back by a very good Weston defence. All in all a fantastic game of football and a solid performance from an ever-improving Taunton side.
