North Somerset RTC V Saints Southwest U16’s
Saturday 15thDecember 2018
North Somerset welcome today’s visitors to Nailsea school for the early 9:30 KO in terrible weather conditions, heavy rain and blustery cold wind which wouldn’t suite either team.
Both teams doing very well this season, North Somerset only losing the opening game of the season and Saints Southwest equally on a great run of wins, sitting top and second in the league which sets up for what should be a great game.
Into the opening period and it was Saints Southwest who started the brighter of the two teams, working extremely hard all over the pitch to close down and put North Somerset under pressure as quickly as possible at every opportunity they could. Playing a high line at tempo under conditions which suiting them more in the first two periods - North Somerset would have to work very hard defending the goal. A little scrappy in the first period with both sides trying to get the ball down and play into the channels although it was saints SW who should have probably scored and just edged the period in terms of possession.
The second period was a little more even between two very good teams on display, NS enjoyed a period of good possession where they managed to put a foot on the game and start to take control of the period. However, Saints SW then took the lead following a shot from the left-hand side which seemed to go through everyone including the NS keeper who didn’t see it until very late. And they could have doubled the lead shortly afterwards with another set piece and a shot just over following some brave defending.
The second half was still a bit of a scrappy affair, conditions which really didn’t help caused a number of mistakes from both teams that gifted possession to the other team however the final product and quality was just missing today up top. NS started to want it more in the half and put Saints SW on the back foot and it was from a free kick won 25 yards out of the left of goal that the equaliser came from. Will Maskell’s free kick was hit perfectly and looped over the keeper giving him no chance of stopping on 55 minutes 1-1. And NS then took the lead on 58 minutes with a goal from Bertie Merrifield, a lovely ball over the top was controlled well under pressure and his run took him one on one with the advancing keeper but his cool finish slotted well into the empty net again giving the keeper no chance of stopping.
The last period was another even affair, Saints SW came out fighting in the last quarter taking the game to North Somerset, however NS seemed to cope well at the back - todays Gold award Nathan Storer and Silver award Harry Watts defended extremely well, passing the ball out from the back with quality and accuracy. How ever there was nothing they could have done to prevent Saints SW levelling late in the game. Saints SW never gave up and seemed would be rewarded for all their hard work with a share of the points, however on 77 minutes NS had other ideals and Bertie Merrifield grabbed his second of the game and NS third on the stroke of full time to take all three points and remain top of the league.
We wish everyone involved with Saints SW all the best for the rest of the season and look forward to playing them again soon, safe journey home.
