Grantham Town U13 v MK Dons Set U13

Grantham Town welcomed MK Dons Set to The Meres this morning for their JPL fixture.

Grantham looked rusty after a week off from competitive football and MK Dons were quick to take advantage. They dominated the early exchanges and made their pressure pay in the 3rd minute when a corner swung in from the right caused chaos in the Grantham area and the ball ended up canoning in off a defender for an own goal. More Dons pressure ensued and they were rewarded again in the 10th minute when a cross from the right was not dealt with in the box and when the ball fell to Rose he finished smartly on the half volley. A minute later it was 3-0 to the Dons when an incisive through ball found Rose again and he made no mistake, slotting neatly into the corner of the net. Grantham rallied for the rest of the quarter and nearly pulled one back when Bray-Smith crossed from the right, but Slater's header crashed against the underside of the bar and bounced out.

The second quarter saw Grantham come out fighting as they tried to get back into the game while they still had the slight breeze behind their backs. A host of chances came and went as Hopkins in the Dons net produced a series of fine saves. Dons still had a threat on the break but Grantham were increasingly camped in the away team's half. Grantham finally got their goal on 28 minutes when Bray-Smith hit a belter of a free kick into the top corner from 25 yards. Grantham's tails were up and they were back in the game on 31 minutes when Cullen slid a through ball to Hall who one-on-one with the onrushing Hopkins unselfishly squared to Bray-Smith who had the easiest of tap ins. 2-3 at half time.

The second half started much more brightly for the Dons. They began to string some passes together and created a couple of half chances that they were unable to capitalise on. Towards the end of the quarter though, the game turned in two crucial minutes. First,  Rigby won a big challenge in midfield for Grantham and his through ball was summarily dispatched by Slater to level the scores. Two minutes later Robinson found himself in space 25 yards out and hit a speculative shot that found the bottom corner. 4-3 Grantham. Much to the Dons credit, their heads did not go down and they continued to try to pass their way back into the game, rather than just go long.

The final quarter started with the match very much still in the balance. Grantham gained a bit of breathing room three minutes in, however, when a threaded ball from Lindsay found Hall who finished astutely with the outside of his left. On 69 minutes Hall returned the favour when a nice move released him on the left and his flighted cross found Lindsay alone at the back stick. The midfielder made no mistake from five yards with his header. Full time, 6-3 to the home side.

This was a great advert for JPL football. Both teams tried to play attractive football and it was both sporting and competitive. Best of luck to the players, parents and coaches of MK Dons for the rest of the season.
