Match Report

Saints SW Devon v TUCST

Saints SW played hosts to Torquay United U13s on the fantastic surface of Teignmouth Community College 3G.

Both teams started the game with a lot of effort and intensity, with Saints trying to dominate territorially, not quite able to hit their quick passing stride from the start. However their effort and persistent pressure brought the opening goal as Finley Brown unselfishly slipped in Jacob Wales to slot home the opener. Moments later Callum Liddle made it two, this time Angus Peattie, collecting the ball from deep from the goalkeeper fired in a low through ball through Torquay defence, for Callum to calmly round the Torquay keeper and slot into the net. Saints started to produce some better spells of passing and possession, but Torquay were working hard too break the play up and counter through their own play.

In the second quarter Saints started to find their rhythm, but had to work hard to break down the Torquay defence in the final third, on occasions the final ball was not quite accurate enough. Saints were playing the ball out from the back confidently, with some wonderfully skilful play from George Russell at CB. Torquay created their best opportunity in this quarter, after Saints lost possession cheaply in their own half, Henry had a good opportunity 1v1 against the Torquay keeper, but under pressure just dragged his shot wide of the post. Saints extended their lead just before the break, as Jacob Wales high pressure, won the ball back off the keeper before slotting into an empty net.

In the third quarter, Saints played some of their best attacking Football of the match, more regularly playing quick one and two touch Football, putting together some very high pass count moves. Leo added a fourth after a fine team move, ended up with an attack down the right, with Jacob and Leo combining well to release the later 1v1, his initial shot was saved but he fired in the rebound. Soon after Charlie added a couple of goals to his own account, now playing as the CF, his first a clinical toe poke past the on rushing keeper into the bottom corner after being sent clear by Jacob Wales, before soon after collecting a ball from Sam who cut in from the left. Charlie used a body feint to create a yard of space before curling the ball into the far top corner. Some wonderful Football on display.

In the final quarter the game became a little more scrappy, Saints experimenting with a change in formation to a 4-4-2, lost some of their possessional dominance, but Torquay continued to work tirelessly throughout the game in attempt to find a goal for themselves. They tested the Saints backline on a few occasions in this quarter but their defence and GK stood up to the test. Sam Clifton almost added another goal to his collecting this season, Charlie smartly slipping him in besides a lined up wall from a central freekick, only for Sam to unfortunately hit the inside of the post.

A great team performance from Saints, registering their first clean sheet of the season, and we wish Torquay and their coach Nathan all the best for the remainder of the season and for making it a competitive game.
