YTCTFC 2 - 1 Taunton Town
Yeovil welcomed Taunton to Gassons lane, in the first competitive fixture between the two sides. With a game on the pitch beforehand, it was going to be a tricky mornings work on a sticky, wet surface.
Both teams started the game brightly, even on such an uneven surface, they looked to play good football through the thirds of the pitch. With both teams having a equal share of possession, mainly through the midfield, the first 20 ended goalless.
The second quarter was muc of the same. Both teams were stringing good passing moves together, with Taunton having a couple of good chances in and around the Yeovil box. They broke the deadlock midway through the second quarter. A neat massage of play down the right ended with a ball into the box for an oncoming midfielder to drive past the keeper, into the far corner.
Yeovil looked to kick on and a few minutes later had their first goal of the morning. After a good spell of possession for Taunton in the attacking half, Yeovil countered quickly. Max Dyer driving with the ball, past the centre half, to have his shot parried by the goalkeeper. Ben Culliford, as all good forwards do, followed up the effort, with a bouncing shot into the ground, evading the keeper and ending in the net. 1-1 at half time.
The second half started, with both teams looking to gain the upperhand. As the sticky pitch started the sap the lads energy, neither team could come up with the quality needed in the final third. With the score remaining 1-1 going in to the last 20.
Yeovil knew they needed to finish the game with as much quality as possible. Taunton started the 20 minutes the better. Having a lot of ball around the Yeovil box. The home team doing a great job in compressing and stopping any dangerous passes through the middle of the pitch. A long clearance down field from the Yeovil defence bounced over the away teams defender, meant James Leadbeater could run in behind and slotted cooly into the corner of the net. 2-1 Yeovil. Yeovil then started to play well around midfield with James Hockey and Cal Nicholls doing a superb job with some quality passes. Taunton still looked dangerous going forward but again, were denied with some 'backs to the wall' defending. Final score; 2-1 Yeovil.
A fantastic game of football with spells of quality football from both teams. We really look forward to the away fixture!
