On a cold, wet and windy Saturday morning Gloucester welcome Cirencester Town to the Walls club hoping to end the year on a positive note and win their first game of the season.
The game started with both sides very nervous and both teams knew this was a massive game in confidence.
Gloucester started the slightly better of the two teams and started to press the Cirencester defence but found a Town defence not willing to give away anything. Soon the away side got a foot hold in the game and starting asking questions of the home side defence, and like their own found a City defence willing to fight for every loose ball and stop any attacks.
The first goal in this contest was going to be key as this may give extra confidence to the team that got it. Bot teams come close and both sets of supporters nerves were on edge.
GOAL, the breakthrough and it went to City through Jayden Esson who ran through a great defence splitting pass to tuck the ball away. Each side create some good half chances but the 1st quarter end with City 1-0.
The second quarter was again a tight affair with both teams playing some good football in the conditions. Could the home side kick on and grab a second or would Town grab that goal and get back into this game. It was again City that grab the goal a second for Esson and then more delight for the home fans as 5mins later Olly Hambling manager to flick the ball goalward 3-0 it’s looking good thought the home side. But it was short lived as Cirencester got straight back into with a well take goal through Charlie Lowe game back on. With nerves kicking into the home side thinking here we go again but they managed to survive to half time 3-1
Down with City kicking down the slight slope they wanted to try to puts on and put the game beyond Town’s reach. Both sides continued to play football and fair play to thenm in tricky conditions. Town’s defence was put under a lot of pressure but held firm. But half way through City got theirs noses further ahead with a wonder strike from James Berry, who pick the ball up on the far edge of the box and arrowed it top corner giving the Ciren keeper no chance. But again just as City thought the put the game out of reach Town hit back with what as been one of Town’s weapons all game was the quality of their corners, always a threat and it was from one of these Town got back into the game with a bullet of a header from Ryan Bunce. 4-2 the quarter finished
Make or break for City in the last quarter, could the hold on and grab their first win of the season and go into the Christmas break on a high. This was a hard fought final quarter with both sets of players not giving an inch. Both keepers made some cracking saves to keep their teams in the game. The City supporters nerves were shattered hoping they would hold and with last then 5mins to go they were saved as Charlie Daniels slotted home a sweeping move to finish the game. 5-2
Well done lads first win of now hoping many. Credit also goes to the Cirencester lads for matching the City lads for effort and making this a good game for the onlooking supports.
Both teams should credit for trying to play a good passing game in tricky conditions
