Torquay United vs Taunton Town Blues
In a game with late drama, Torquay United came out on top against Taunton Town Blues to win their first game in the U14 South West Division.
Taunton struck inside the opening minutes of the game, scoring with their first chance at goal. The hosts responded well, but were struggling to find the goal that their play deserved. Chances fell for Sam Bishop, Sean Brown and Sam Healey. Defender Danny Grant also came close with a 30 yard strike, after a superb passage of play down the left hand side.
Taunton struggled to contain United's passing play, yet the home side were still unable to find the goal to level the match. On the counter, Taunton looked to get in behind, but United's defence was rarely under enough pressure to warrant a second goal.
Shortly after the half-time break, United did find the net, with Sean Brown finishing under pressure from around 15 yards into the roof of the net. Torquay kept pushing now, as the visitors began to tire. The hosts thought they had gone ahead when Sam Healey finished well from a Danny Grant free-kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
United responded well to the disappointment of having that goal chalked off, and continued to press for the goal that would give them the lead. Jay Rich had a good chance to put United ahead, but the Taunton keeper was equal to it and kept the scores level. As the game entered the final quarter, Taunton began to apply a bit more pressure in order to snatch the winner.
With under ten minutes to go, United got the goal that their play deserved. It was good work down the left hand side, resulting in a ball into the area where Bishop was waiting. His initial effort was stopped by the goalkeeper, but fell kindly for the midfielder to poke home from close range. The delight on the United player's faces was there for all to see. Two soon became three as Torquay killed the game off with a couple of minutes to go. Again, it was a scramble in the Taunton area, eventually ending with Ricco Moranzoni applying the final touch to score the goal to seal a deserved victory for the hosts.
Taunton pushed late on in order to try and reduce the deficit, but United were able to see their final attacks out without any real danger, and the match finished Torquay United 3-1 Taunton Town Blues.
