Torquay United 4-3 Taunton Town Clarets
The Under-14 South West Division match between Torquay United and Taunton Town Clarets produced a thrilling goalfest at Seale Hayne.
Taunton started the stronger team, as a fairly quiet opening period saw the visitors enjoy the better of it. They managed to make their pressure count with a goal towards the end of the opening quarter of the match, with their striker getting behind the Torquay back line and firing well into the corner.
Torquay responded well to this set back, and got themselves into some good areas, creating a couple of chances that were off-target. As the second quarter moved towards the end, it was Taunton again who managed to score - this time a super counter attack from a Torquay corner, again finished well by the Taunton striker.
The third quarter would be a decisive period - Torquay were in danger of the game getting out of reach, so it was important that they kept themselves in the match. Torquay continued to apply pressure, without challenging the Taunton goalkeeper too much in the opening minutes of the period. Taunton had a couple of half chances to put the tie to bed, but by this point the hosts were really probing and pressurising their opponents. With one minute of the third quarter remaining, Torquay finally got themselves on the scoresheet. Sam Bishop drove forward from midfield before sliding through to release Alfie Lloyds, who poked under the onrushing goalkeeper.
It was all set for an exciting last period now, as Torquay really through caution to the wind to try and complete the comeback. Taunton were under heavy pressure now, and stayed in front only due to a phenomenal double save from the Taunton goalkeeper. As the clock ticked into the final 10 minutes, Torquay did level. A corner was met by George Collins, who was able to direct his header past the goalkeeper and in. 2-2 now, and all to play for.
The final 2 minutes of the match saw 3 goals. From a Torquay goalkick, played short to a defender, the ball was returned to the keeper who's clearance was sliced right to the Taunton striker. His strike squeezed under the goalkeeper and trickled in by the post, and Taunton had stolen the lead.
In a crazy final 60 seconds, Torquay levelled once again. A long free kick from Danny Grant caused havoc and it was forced over the line from close range by George Collins, for his second of the game. From the restart, another Torquay freekick from deep was launched forward by Grant. Taunton struggled to deal with it, and Theo Gately was able to prod the ball home from inside the six-yard box, with what was virtually the final kick of the match.
It had been a real rollercoaster, as Taunton enjoyed superiority in the first half before Torquay responded with real character to pull the win out of the bag in crazy circumstances. Both teams played with excellent spirit throughout, which was great to see.
