A thoroughly entertaining game between two excellent sides played in the right spirit and sportsmanship. The first quarter was a very even affair, with both sides moving the ball at pace, trying to create and fashion opening through organised defence lines. Chances were created by both sides, but none were able to test the respective goalkeepers to great effect. The 2nd quarter was heading the same way until Steyning KS managed to scramble a loose ball home from a corner that deceived both sides, with the goal being eventually credited to Gabriel Heyes.
The 3rd quarter, unsurprisingly the relentless pace of the game dropped, but Steyning took a decisive foothold in the game with 2 quick goals. Firstly Toby Reeder burst through the Pompey defence after a fine short passing move, and rifled his shot in the bottom corner. Two minutes later an Ellis Martin corner that had swerve and dip sailed into the opposite top corner giving the keeper no chance. On the stroke of the end of the quarter, Pompey got a deserved goal when their forward followed up his own header that had struck the crossbar and nodded into an empty net, setting up a fascinating final quarter.
However it was Steyning, despite some excellent play from Pompey, that wrapped up the game in the final quarter. Firstly Noah Andrews weaved his way through clear on goal and finished emphatically. Fletcher Russell, then showed great determination and strength to hold off several challenges to muscle his way into the box and again finish in clinical style. Finally from a Steyning counter attack, they swept up the pitch and two combination passes let Toby Reeder complete a brace with a low finish into the corner of the net.
So an excellent game and credit to the officials, players, coaches and spectators who contributed to the occasion
