Wiltshire AFC v Aldershot Town
A glorious morning for the first ever meeting of Wiltshire Football Academy and Aldershot Town FC. A tentative start by both teams with end to end play for the first few minutes, as both teams gave the ball away quite easily. The scoring opened up ten minutes in as Wiltshire hit the back of the net thanks Noah Cranswick-Coates’ well placed free kick in the top right hand corner. This fired up Aldershot who came straight back and were unlucky not score from the opportunities they created. Wiltshire countered with some good runs out on the wing, but towards the end of the quarter it was Aldershot who looked dangerous on the attack, their best opportunity coming from a beautifully taken corner, cleared by solid defending.
After the first break it was Aldershot who looked the hungrier of the two sides, breaking through the Wiltshire defence to tap the ball in past the keeper to level the score. During this period of play Aldershot were first on the ball and unlucky not to score, with a number of shots just wide of the net. Wiltshire finally made a break on the wing and Ed Dharmasiri capitalised on the beautifully timed cross to tap the ball in. He neatly followed this up with a confident run through Aldershot's defence to strike home once again, bringing the score to 3-1 at half time.
Aldershot upped the pressure again at the start of the third quarter winning two corners in succession, but just couldn’t capitalise on the well placed crosses. Wiltshire eventually countered, without some neat passes in the midfield which resulted in a high kick over the Aldershot keepers head, headed in by Matty Dixon. Undeterred, Aldershot fought back with a good run outwitting Wiltshire’s defence to bring the score to 4-2.
The final 20 minutes saw Wiltshire finally up the tempo and come out stronger with more considered play. This was almost immediately rewarded with a goal from Frank Dunn. However, a determined Aldershot squad once again fought back with a good clear break through the midfield and were rewarded for their efforts. Undeterred Wiltshire went on the counter attacked, using the width of the pitch to create a great opportunity which Alec Gawthropp made the most of. Final score 6-3.
Aldershot were a determined team and it was a hard fought win for the home side
