Shortwood United welcomed Gloucester City to the Meadowbank Stadium on a damp Saturday morning.
Shortwood started the first quarter strongly, and were rewarded with a Jake Evans goal scored from close range, following a Harvey Nightingale cross. Luke Coleridge equalised for Gloucester with a looping shot over the keeper from outside the box. Although Shortwood created numerous chances, they were unable to convert them, ending the quarter 1-1.
The second quarter followed the same pattern as the first, with Shortwood creating chances but narrowly missing the target. Eventually Shortwood broke through when Callum Freeman made a strong run down the wing, and pulled the ball back to James Day whose shot was deflected into the goal by Jake Evans. Gloucester drew level when Salim Aziz scored a breakaway goal.
The third quarter was very even, with both teams competing strongly. Shortwood scored their third goal when a Toby Colliver free kick was saved by the Gloucester keeper, with the rebound falling to James Day who was following up. Gloucester equalised again from a long range shot by Will Davis, which went flying into the top corner. Taylor Arnold then picked up the ball in mid field, scoring a great long range shot past the keeper.
The final quarter was again very even, with neither side able to score and both goalies diving bravely at the strikers feet to keep the final score at Shortwood 4 Gloucester 3.
Both teams deserve credit for giving 100% effort in a closely fought game.
