Match Report

A game to warm the heart on a freezing morning!

Despite the horrible conditions, freezing cold, colder wind and freezing rain, both teams were determined not to let that stop them playing good football. The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges, although Wiltshire competed well, but it was not against the run of play when Yate went 1-0 up half way through the first period.

The second period opened brightly, with both teams looking to get on the front foot, Yate looking to extend their lead, while Wiltshire were equally determined to nullify it. It was Yate who broke the deadlock, extending their lead to 2-0. But a fine run, clever flick and great finish from Archie brought the home team back into contention, until with nearly the last kick of the period, Yate again restored their two-goal advantage.

The 3rd period saw Sam Hughes return from injury and make an immediate impact, scoring a fine goal to reduce the deficit to 3-2, before his strike partner Jacob added to his tally for the season, pressing the keeper to create the chance that saw him level the score at 3-3. Yate had the final word in an exciting 3rd period, restoring their lead to take us into the final period of the game finely balanced at 4-3 to the visitors.

Both teams came out determined to take all 3 points and Hughesy again made an immediate impact, striking well to make it 4-4 before sealing his hat-trick to give Wiltshire the lead for the first time in the game. But Yate were not going home without at least a share of the spoils and levelled with just over 5 minutes remaining to even the game out at 5-5.

It's easy to see why Yate have won every game until now, and in truth both sides could fairly claim to have done enough to win a thrilling encounter, but neither side deserved to lose, so a draw is probably about the right result! Well done to both teams who played to an extremely high standard throughout in dreadful conditions but didn't let that put them off from playing some terrific football.
