Match Report

Paulton vs Wiltshire Football Academy

After back to back wins, a buoyant Paulton Rovers welcomed Wiltshire Football Academy to a sunny Norton Hill School 3g. From the whistle Wilts looked sharp and switched on and early pressure forced a corner. The over hit ball was put back in the danger zone from the far side eluding the safe hands of the Paulton keeper and in the resulting melee hooked in from close range. Paulton were now in a game but struggling to find any shape or composure. This was soon exploited on left, after failing to close down the winger and giving the man in yellow the benefit of the doubt, his shot/cross found the top right-hand corner. Paulton were desperately trying to get a foothold in the game and following a break on the left, a rushed and panicked shot swung wide. Paulton’s confidence was steadily growing however from a corner the clearance found the Wilts striker who set off on a pitch length run. Darting across the pitch he left the Paulton defence floundering, though the final shot couldn’t find the target. Wilts continued to surge forward, overloading the Paulton defence. From a corner, the Paulton keeper makes a save, scrabbling to make a clearance, Wilts shoot wide. Paulton are lucky to be only two down and need to find their mojo for the next twenty.  First Quarter, 0 – 2.

Paulton begin the 2nd Quarter with some much-needed vigour and start pushing up and getting men forward. Wilts absorb the pressure and exploit the space with a couple of quick counters. Both times the Paulton keeper comes of best, expertly denying the Wilts forward in a 1v1. Wilts continue to play with composure, passing and moving, and press quickly whenever out of possession. Paulton struggle to retain the ball and build any constructive play. Soon Wilts are rewarded, a cross from the left is parried into the path of the waiting striker for a tap in. Nothing is going right for Paulton, a shot from distance is inches over. Once again Wilts find the back of the net from a corner. Elegantly delivered to the edge of the six-yard box, a well-placed shoulder does the damage. The only highlight of the quarter from a weary Paulton side is some audacious out field play by the Paulton keeper. Approaching the half way line, he finds the left wing back who launches into a driving run, the shot is just wide. Second Quarter, 0 – 4.

Clearly lady luck for Paulton is still in the dressing room, as straight from the restart Wilts score another. From a throw in the attacking half, the ball is missed by the defender leaving the Wilts forward to mop up and place the ball inside the left post. Again, Paulton appear to have no energy and the late night watching the ‘Young Lions’ is taking its toll. Then from another throw we have a repeat of the goal in the first quarter. After no closing down, the ball is tucked away into the top right corner. The striker would call it a shot, the crowd know differently!  The latter moments of the quarter see some scrappy play. Both teams seem to be ignoring their midfield with long hopeful balls forward. Wilts nearly make Paulton pay with a well-placed free-kick directed wide.  Third Quarter, 0 - 6.

The early stages of the 4th Quarter see some valiant Paulton defending with a spike in energy, but with no discernible results. Frustration is creeping in, but the experience ref keeps matters in hand. Wilts continue to play with confidence and hunger. Paulton are flagging, failing again to close and gifting Wilts an easy shot and goal. Wilts continue to dominate, and further shots are saved by the keeper and the post. Wilts now are playing fluid easy football, moving the ball quickly up the pitch. Soon this attacking play pays off again and a square cross is comfortably despatched to make eight.  Any Paulton response is hindered by lacklustre passing and fatigue. Some excellent play sees a comfortable victory for Wilts and early night for Paulton. Final score, 0 – 8.
