Close Cup Game Against RTC South Somerset
Paulton Rovers welcomed RTC South Somerset today for the League cup match. Rain was forecast and before the warm-up was done it arrived.
PR started the game well with control, good passing and support options all over the pitch. They moved the ball purposefully through the thirds as they looked for opportunities in front of goal. For all the good play PR displayed when in possession however, the game was still very even as South Somerset showed a similar ability to control the play and develop attacks. Unfortunately for S. Somerset the PR defence early on was alert to the danger posed by their forwards and were able to hold a strong defensive line that worked well together to snub out attacks or catch players in offside positions.
With a quarter of an hour gone this was still a very even game, but the deadlock was broken when good play from S. Somerset down the right followed by an unselfish pass across the 6 yard box provided the waiting forward with a simple tap in to complete a good team goal.
With lots of time remaining, PR continued to work hard without the ball and play well when in possession. They worked effectively all over the pitch and created chances with efforts narrowly off target, scrambled away or narrowly mistimed that on another day would have made this game even more entertaining.
S. Somerset too created chances hitting the post and forcing Will to make several great saves before a headed effort from a corner saw the lead extended 0-2 with over 30 mins played.
In the second half, PR showed belief that their efforts would be rewarded by continuing to try and play in the right way, while S. Somerset buoyed by their goals continued to test the defence. Fortunately for PR, the next goal was theirs as a high ball into the goal mouth got a touch from James to wrong foot the GK and bounce into the goal to make it 1-2.
With time running out in this cup game PR changed to a more attacking formation in the hope of taking it to penalties. PR applied sustained pressure with almost every instance of possession resulting in a foray into the final third. S. Somerset responded in kind, however the match finished 1-2 as neither team could convert further opportunities.
Paulton Rovers would like to thank RTC South Somerset for the game today and we wish them all the best for the rest of the season.
