Torquay Utd U15s v Blues Sw
In the end it was, almost inevitably, decided on penalties, with TUFC the victors by 3-0 with home goalkeeper Zac Linley-Moss the hero as he produced a couple of outstanding saves to deny the Blues and see his team progress into the next round of the Cup.
As for the game itself, it was more than 20 minutes old before either goalkeeper was properly tested. TUFC winger Ollie Nicks drew a save down low at the near post for the Blues keeper.
Torquay striker Tom Burt then had a couple of fine efforts from just outside the bar, on 30 minutes and again on 37 minutes, which only just cleared the bar on both occasions.
Torquay had just edged the first half both in terms of possession and chances but Blues came back more strongly in the second half and managed to exert some pressure of their own on the home goal.
Ben Hopkins, for Blues, dragged a fine effort from just outside of the box just wide on 54 minutes.
Then on the hour and in the space of four minutes both sides saw their best chance at breaking the deadlock, but both were to be denied by the woodwork.
On 60 minutes James Rowe, for Torquay, hit the bar with a near post header from a Tom Burt corner. But Blues responded with their best chance four minutes later when Hopkins again tried his luck from the edge of the box but saw his effort hit the bar and then the back of the home goalkeeper Moss before being scrambled away to safety.
Blues defender Collings made what was surely a goal saving challenge on 70 minutes to deny home striker Tom Burt who was about to pull the trigger in the box with only the keeper to beat.
With just a few minutes left, Burt saw an effort clip the outside of the post after being put through by James de Selincourt’s strong run.
And so the game went to penalties. Ollie Nicks, Dan Chapman and Jack Windsor all converted theirs, but unfortunately for Blues their first effort had cleared the bar and they then saw both their second and third penalties saved brilliantly by Linley-Moss, who was understandably mobbed by his teammates at the end.
Always an unfortunate way to decide a game but it was Torquay who won through with a 3-0 margin in the penalty shootout in the end.
Both these sides have made very strong starts in the League and when they lock horns again you wouldn’t bet against another very tight affair!
