All the Fours-Close Quarters and Goals!
After a good attacking performance last week, we welcomed Phil back to help keep it tight in defence and he didn't disappoint with a superb, strong MotM performance. We'd had to move off the High School pitch to the far off Pitch 5 which was at least mowed if a little bumpy but the sun was out and a lovely morning for a game of football. We'd had some ins and outs for the squad and ended up with only two subs on a hot day so we knew we'd have to rotate the subs and keep the energy levels up on the pitch.
We started well with nearly the same lineup as last week and got off to a good start with Cam swinging in a free kick which Zak got on the end of with a free header but straight at the Rushall keeper. On nine minutes we went ahead although I didn't see much as I was fetching a ball out of the canal with Jason-not the only time! It looked like the ball was in the Rushall area and Elijah set back to Joe who from the edge of the area side footed the ball into the bottom corner. The keeper dived and got fingertips on it but it bounced over and into the corner-1:0 to us. Soon after on 14 minutes, we nearly had another as Zak played the ball in the area to Cam who swivelled and hit the far post-very close. Rushall were slow to start having not played for five weeks and let us have plenty of time and space on the ball but we knew it wouldn't last as they blew away the cobwebs. On 17 minutes they had a free kick but Ryan came out commanding with safe hands. On 19 minutes they nearly drew level after a cross from the right wasn't cut out and Ryan saved wide which looked like it would be tapped in by the Rushall left winger. But Alex scrambled across and made a key block tackle on the line to keep it out to ensure we went in at the end of quarter one leading 1:0.
We made our two subs with Alex moving to right back and Phil coming in to defence to form a wall across the back. We started to settle into a controlled performance and play some nice football and on 11 minutes we got a second. I was just coming back from the canal again when Cam had a corner so I claim the assist as I told him to float it into the six yard box for us to run onto. And guess what, Phil had an easy tap in-I thank you!! So 2:0 to us but Rushall were starting to play better football and Ryan had to come out to block several times. On 18 minutes, we were sloppy at the back and Rushall had a good shot but over the bar and that's how Q2 ended-2:0 to us.
So on to Q3 and Rushall were getting better as the game wore on but we were also looking very strong and started well and on top. On four minutes Zak pressed well and won the ball back for Mogs who strode on but smashed wide. Soon after Cam broke on the left but shot straight at the keeper. The game was still tight and we knew the next goal to either side was crucial in deciding the game. Luckily it went to us on 14 minutes to make it 3:0. Lewis on the right played the ball in to Mogs who turned in the area but was tripped for a penalty. Elijah grabbed the ball and smashed it to the left as the keeper dived to the right. That should have sealed the win and it was just how we managed the rest of the game with Rushall starting to push us hard at the back. But Ryan and the defence of Alex, Phil, Dan and Rio were looking really solid to see out the rest of the quarter.
With only the fourth and final quarter to go, could we see out the win with a clean sheet or would Rushall manage to breach our watertight defence? On five minutes, Lewis played the ball on the right wing to the overlapping Alex who swung in a deep cross to the back post. It looked too long but Eliot came steaming in and knocked it back towards the goal. The ball bounced up and hit the bar but as it came down just the other side of Zak, the Rushall defence managed to clear it away. But we had a fourth goal on seven minutes. Dan lofted a high free kick to the back edge of the area and Zak challenged well so the ball knocked back into the six yard box. Lewis had only the keeper to beat but scuffed as he swung round but this only moved the ball on to Josh who had an open goal from three yards and couldn't miss-or could he? No, as he made it 4:0 to us. One minute later and Dan did the same free kick but Phil nodded over from five yards out. Eliot had a break on twelve minutes but the Rushall keeper made another good save. The game drifted on and we kept an iron grip on the scoreline. Rushall kept pushing hard and eventually got frustrated and we started to overplay in our own half with a bumpy pitch-not the best idea for slick triangle passing! But that's how the game ended 4:0 to us.
We've always had close tight games and draws with Rushall and I think we may have been fortunate that they hadn't played for a few weeks which meant we had our best performance and from recall our first win against them. But all credit also to our boys especially the defence who kept it really tight despite some significant pressure and crosses from Rushall. All in all a very mature squad performance today winning all four quarters 1:0 and very pleasing for the coaches. Near the end of the season and we start finding some superb form-typical but we'll need it next week home to Hereford.
