North Somerset RTC V Hereford FC U16’s
North Somerset welcome today’s visitors Hereford FC to Clevedon School 3G for a 10:45 KO on a very wet and windy morning for today’s Cup match. Hereford unbeaten this season in any competitive match going into today’s match in great form and North Somerset yet to really get their second half of the season underway, having not played for 3 weeks.
A good start by Hereford under difficult conditions, gale force winds threaten to spoil the match which could go in anyone’s favor. North Somerset didn’t really start the match as bright as Hereford and were quickly made to pay for poor marking conceding a free kick 20 yards from goal out of nothing but determination of the Hereford front man. The resulting free kick was hit low and hard beating the NS keeper low down to the right. Then 3 minutes later Hereford doubled the lead when a ball which should have been cleared by the NS center back was lost to the left sided attacker of Hereford who easily ran past his man into the box and slotted under the advancing keeper into the roof of the net.
NS were all over the place in a crazy 5-minute spell which credit to Hereford who took the game to NS and were devastating in front of goal early on. Then 13 minutes it was 3-0 to the away team with a lovely volley from 6 yards out back across goal into the open net, from a cross on the right-hand side after some good footwork from the right winger.
NS needed a quick reply and did get a lifeline when winger Ruben Tredgold received the ball on the right, ran past his marker and produced a lovely cross into the box and Danny Constable made no mistake from close range 1-3 and game on.
The remaining 24 minutes of the half was a much closer affair, NS had at least 2 or 3 chances of their own to grab a second or even could have levelled when Alfie Maddern one on one with the keeper hit the ball down the throat of the keeper which credit to him made a good save and then another free kick could have fallen nicer for Bertie Merrifield instead was hit over and out for a goal kick. Hereford were very good today at keeping possession when nothing was on and using all the players including the keeper well until a chance was created. Everyone worked extremely hard off the ball to create options going forward and space to create chances.
Into the second half, and it was Hereford who quickly added to the 3 goals in the first half with a forth just 2 minutes after the break. NS defended well kicking the ball out for a corner, the resulting kick was hit back post which was picked up by the attacking front man unmarked striking the ball hard into the top corner of the goal, 1-4.
This seemed to knock the wind out of NS who did fight back after conceding 3 quick goals but had no reply to Hereford who were in no mood to hold back. And on 65 minutes made it 1-5 with a long-range ball into the front two, NS missed the chance to clear and with no mistake the striker slotted home low and hard into the goal giving the NS keeper no chance.
NS did get a consolation goal on 75 minutes, after winning a free kick 25 yards from goal, Will Banks (today’s Silver award) hit the ball over the wall straight into the net giving the keeper no chance of saving. Conditions today were not the best although the pitch is in great condition and the match was played in the best spirit.
We wish Hereford FC all the best in the next round of the cup and a safe journey home, well played today.
