Match Report
AFC Diamonds U16's v Bradford City Academy - U16 League Cup
Today we welcomed Bradford City to the MAA on this bright but very windy day.
In terms of the weather, I think its fair to say that strong wind is the worst of all the conditions our lads have to play in, and today - it was worse than that - but they all coped well considering. It was Bradford who settled into the game the better, their passing game suiting the conditions and the technicality of their players giving the home side something to think about. There were chances both ends before Diamonds got a free kick just outside the visitor box after 15 minutes and Charlier Pearson struck resulting free kick in corner of the net, giving the Bradford goalkeeper little chance. The scoreline doubled not more than a minute later when Tom Simmons bundled the ball home, being the quickest to react to the ball bouncing around on the six yard box. Bradford had chances in the half with Luke Munroe performing some amazing saves to keep the visitors at bay. Diamonds made some changes mid-way through the half and these changes paid off immediately when Bailey Weatherly beat his man to head home from a corner to go 3-0 up. Bradford still continued to play their passing game and were rewarded for their efforts when their number 9 smashed home after some good work down their left wing. The score was 3-1 at half time.
The second half started with both teams feeling the next goal may be decisive and it was Diamonds who got it - somewhat fortunately, when Jacob Peakes corner seemed to go straight in. There were a few claiming the goal to be fair. The game then fell into a pattern where both sides had chances but no one seemed able to take advantage and the game stayed at 4-1 until the last 5 minutes or so, when 2 goals, late on, both from Charlie Pearson, put the game beyond doubt. The final result was 6-1 to the home team. It was a pleasure hosting Bradford, we wish them well for the rest of the season and their joirney home.
