Diamonds 4 – 2 Rushall
Today we welcomed Rushall to Malcolm Arnold for the next round of the League cup and a chance to progress into the Quarter Finals. Rushall started brightly and competed well in the early exchanges. After 10 minutes Diamonds started to find their stride and grew to establish control of the game particularly in midfield. It was a good contest, with Diamonds starting to create chance after chance but were unable to find the finishing touch. Will Jones had a good shot inside the box saved by the keeper, followed shortly by another opportunity for Jacob Peaks who let rip from outside the area. Diamonds continued to dominate play and Will Jones was unlucky with an overhead kick in the area. It was only a matter of time before the Diamonds pressure would pay off. However, Rushall won possession in the Diamonds half and the ball was fed into their forward who shot from outside the area beating the Diamonds keeper and nestling into the far corner of the net. Rushall had taken the lead on 27 minutes with their first effort on goal. Diamonds responded immediately with a superb header from Trent Oakes after a great delivery from a Jacob Peaks corner to equalise in the 28th minute. Diamonds finished the first half the stronger side and continued to create numerous chances, coming closest with a strong run from Bailey Weatherly who beat three defenders as he powered into the penalty area only to be foiled by a good save by the keeper.
The second half started as the first half ended with Diamonds having most of the possession, however, with a long ball forward from Rushall the Diamonds defence failed to deal with the high ball and the striker looped the ball over the keeper to give the visitors another unlikely lead early into the second period. Chances continued to be created by Diamonds with constant pressure being applied all over the pitch. Trent Oakes came closest hitting the bar with a header, but the equaliser did not seem to be forthcoming. Diamonds started to shoot regularly from range. With 20 minutes left Bailey Weatherly, whose continued work rate caused the Rushall defence no end of problems drove into the penalty area and unleashed a great finish high into the net to equalise 2-2. The next goal was crucial in the game and with less than 10 minutes to play, Bailey scored his second goal of the game with a great finish from another assist by Jacob Peaks. Three minutes later the win was fully secured with a Diamonds penalty after a foul on Bailey. Tom Walton cooly dispatched the ball to continue his great run of scoring penalties.
The game finished 4-2. Diamonds fully deserved the victory with the game being played in a good spirit. We wish Rushall all the best for the remainder of the season.
