Torquay United 1-5 Ignite Sport FC
Torquay United went down to Ignite Sport FC by a scoreline of 1-5, and will be left wondering what could have been had they been more clinical in front of goal.
The match was just 15 seconds old when the visitors took the lead, the Ignite striker pouncing on a mistake at the back and lobbing Max Weeks in goal. The hosts responded very well to the early set back, and levelled through Sean Brown inside the opening 5 minutes. Torquay continued to dictate the tempo in the first quarter of an hour, and could have gone ahead but George Collins' long range effort hit the base of the post and bounced out. A couple more opportunities presented themselves, but didn't amount to anything of note. Ignite were being restricted to playing on the counter.
The visitors got themselves back into the game and began applying some pressure of their own, and went 2-1 up when their striker scored a neat finish through Weeks' legs. 2-1 became 3-1 with the final chance of the first half, and it was a superb strike right into the corner from the edge of the box.
Torquay started the second half fairly strongly, albeit not reaching the levels they had hit in the opening period of the game. They continued to look to get themselves back in the game, failing to take advantage of a few set plays into the Ignite area. Up at the other end, Ignite themselves were still causing problems as United tried to adapt to a different style of play. A corner from the visitors was cleared straight back to the wide area. The second delivery was a super cross, and was met by an emphatic finish at the far post - 1-4.
The game was almost over as a contest, although Torquay kept playing and creating opportunities. Sam Bishop and George Collins had good efforts, while Alfie Lloyds headed a good opportunity over. Sean Brown also hit the post, denying him his second goal of the game.
At the death, there was a fifth Ignite goal, with a shot from outside the box slipping through Jack Grant's hands and into the net. It proved to be the final action of the game, and Ignite make the journey home looking forward to the next round of the U14 Trophy.
Credit to both sides for playing the game in the right spirits throughout.
