Stoke RTC 5-0 Worcester City
Stoke RTC welcomed Worcester City to Newcastle College on a bright Saturday September morning for the first of the JPL Cup Qualifiers. The game began fairly evenly, with spells of possession for both teams. A dropped through ball by the Worcester goalkeeper mid way through the first quarter was capitalised on by Harvey Pickering who pounced to make it 1-0.
Stoke began to take control of the game in the second quarter. Harvey Pickering scored a magnificent individual goal from a sharp Stoke counter attack, beating the Worcester defence for pace and power, dashing through to score his second of the game. Joe Lee made it 3-0 shortly after, after a corner was scrambled clear, only for Lee to hit a sweetly struck long range piledriver into the top corner! Lee added to his second of the game from a penalty soon after as Stoke were well on top at this point to end the half at 4-0.
Worcester picked themselves up in the second half and began to look a lot more compact. However the game began to become a little more physical as the quarter drew on, which prevented any sort of goalfest seen in the previous quarter.
It was Stoke who added a fifth goal in the final quarter after a couple of good chances were squandered from both teams. Jack Huxley started the move from just inside his own half. He played the ball wide to the impressive Ollie Campbell, who cut inside the full back to tuck it back to Huxley who finished first time on the turn. A very impressive Stoke move to finish the quarter.
A good start to the JPL Cup for the boys in red. We would like to wish our opponents Worcester City the best of luck for the rest of their season.
