Season opener sees visitors triumph in 8 goal thriller
First game of the JPL season and Evesham hosted WBA in a high tempo and quality match in the Vale.
West Brom made a dream start to the game, scoring within the first minute with direct play through the centre and then a cool finish over the advancing keeper. The visitors continued to cause all sorts of trouble for Evesham, and doubled their lead after 10 mins following a break down the left wing, and some neat interchanges before slotting home to make it 2-0. Evesham heads could have dropped, however only a minute later, they found a lifeline, with a good break down the left wing by Charlie G, and a neat finish from Jamie. With their tails up, Evesham continued to push and brought scores level with a straight ball down the centre and Ben G lobbing the keeper and finishing well. An entertaining quarter ended 2-2. The second quarter was fast and furious but goalless. Both sides battled hard, and Josh in the Evesham goal made a number of good saves, including an excellent double stop.
Into the second half, and it was WBA who took the lead with an excellent finish from the edge of the box to the keepers right side, 2-3, quickly followed by another to make it 2-4. Both sides really battling now and into a period which saw a couple of yellow cards, and a penalty to Evesham when George was brought down in the box. Olllie scored the penalty with a clinical finish to the bottom LHS, 3-4. Loads of effort from both sides in the quarter, however WBA were looking the more comfortable in possession and picking out the passes.
Final quarter, and Evesham moved onto the front foot to rescue something from the game. Evesham were throwing everything at the WBA defence, however making limited inroads, whilst the visitors were looking increasingly dangerous on the break, and made the breakthrough with 10 mins to go, breaking down the left wing, before squaring into the box, and a neat close range finish to make it 3-5. Evesham continued to press to the end, however couldn’t make the breakthrough, and an excellent season opener ended with a win for WBA.
Despite this being the first game of the season, some excellent skills and fitness shown from both teams and lots to look forward to in the season ahead.
