Taunton Town U16 v Saints SW Devon U16
Having played a friendly the week before, both teams knew what to expect from their opponents. Same location, same teams Taunton were looking to ensure they did not concede so easily this time round.
A steady start however within five minutes, Taunton defender Jack Holmwood came off injured having received a stud down his calf. With a game plan slightly changed, Charlie White came on to replace settling into a non-normal defensive position. Things were looking positive for Taunton with Oliver Chubb and Ellison Webber working well as a partnership in mid-field; Taunton's first attack was the result of Oliver's ball in, headed wide of the goal by Ellison. Promising....
Play switched and a Saints penalty call in the Taunton box was waved off by the referee, however shortly after a Taunton defensive error gave Saints the opportunity to score. At the 10 minute mark, Saints 1, Taunton 0.
Remain positive, reset, try again. That's exactly what Taunton did. Unfortunately an unlucky deflection saw a Saints player gifted with both time and space, shot score. 2 - 0. A second goal for Kuba Subchok.
Undeterred Taunton started and pressed, resulting in a shot on goal by Albert Hacker, only to fall straight to the Saints keeper.
Q1 Taunton 0 Saints 2.
The second quarter was more of a steady affair. Taunton steadied themselves and started to put pressure on Saints. The game became slightly more physical and a Taunton free kick saw the Saints keeper stretched to give a corner. Could we convert? A great cross in saw Taunton's Konrad Michon stretch and get a foot in, only for the ball to go straight into the keepers arms. Play ebbed and flowed, however the deadlock could not be broken.
Half time: Taunton 0 Saints 2.
Taunton has been working on fitness quite a bit over the last few months and suffice, I am pleased to say that generally where the third quarter was our bogey quarter and goals were conceded, today, pressure was maintained and Taunton really looked like they could take control of the game. Ethan Hill took command at the back as a central defender, Charlie White took control of the mid-field in his normal role, Olly Simkin caused havoc with his work rate and Albert Hacker and Callum Chivers working the left flank provided a solid block. Despite best efforts and immense pressure, Saints staved off the attack.
Q3 Taunton 0 Saints 2.
Start of the fourth quarter and Saints went on the attack. Massive pressure was put on the Taunton keeper, Charlie Buckley, but despite their best efforts Saints could not break the Taunton defence. A superb piece of defending saw Billy Bradbury clear the line. Play switched and some superb work saw Taunton's Luke Margetts battle and win a penalty for Taunton. Pressure on, he won it, he'll take it. Unfortunately Luke's shot was saved by the Saints keeper and despite the rebound he was unable to slot the ball away. Saints were on the counter, recovery was needed by Taunton, however the Saints player was away, surely another goal? No, some superb bravery saw Saints thwarted and the counter diffused.
Taunton's command of the fourth quarter was superb. Work rate increased and players battled for the ball. One instance saw Taunton's keeper take an elbow to the head. On the ground, was he ok? Better safe than sorry, Albert Hacker returns to the field of play, not as a wing back, but as a keeper.
Straight in the fray and he commands the ball. Taunton piles on the pressure and cracks are starting to show in the Saints defence, surely a Taunton goal is on the cards. No, against run of play Saints counter and a shot on target from Saints player Luke Manuell which was covered by Albert deflects off Ethan Hill into the Taunton net. Really unfortunate but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
Final whistle: Taunton Town 0 Saints SW Devon 3.
Gold: Callum Chivers
Silver: Olly Simkin
