Saints 3-3 Torquay
SSW Devon vs Torquay
Saturday 9th November 2019
A tight game, with most action in the 3rd quarter.
Torrential rain an hour before kick-off was an ominous sign, but by halftime the grey clouds had cleared making way for some unexpected sunshine. Torquay started the brighter of the two teams; they were well organised and worked a high press to great effect. After a couple of near misses, their pressing forced a mistake, the resulting shot coming back off the bar only to be neatly finished in the bottom left. Undeterred, Saints stuck to their passing game but looked to be lacking energy, with Torquay winning 50/50’s and getting to loose balls first. Chances fell at both ends with Ethan, Noah and Ollie denied by resolute defending and keeping. Henry made some great saves at the other end and Stevie and Jasper worked hard in defence to control the Torquay threat and play out from the back. The first quarter finished 1-0 to Torquay.
With the game a little flat and scrappy, Q2 saw chances for both teams; saves from Harry and shots from Toby, Fin, Harry, Ethan and Jeremy were well saved or blocked by Torquay keeping the score line at 1-0. Saints worked hard to get a foothold in the game, but Torquay broke the deadlock 6mins into the quarter, again their high press forcing an error which was neatly finished. The quarter finished 2-0 to Torquay.
Jeremy finally opened the scoring for Saints early in the 3rd quarter with great footwork and a drilled shot from outside the box to make it 2-1. The goal lifted Saints and for a while they were on top, passing and moving better than in the first two periods. Toby equalised halfway through the quarter latching onto a good infield pass from Ali, but a minute later Torquay took the lead for a second time, again with organised and quick pressing coupled with composed finishing. Saints responded and upped the tempo with a series of shots, Toby converting for his second goal after a great turn to make it 3-3.
Saints were now on top and looking more like themselves but Torquay maintained their discipline, working hard and looking dangerous whenever they broke. Both keepers were called into action, with the Torquay goalie and defence having the greater workload with shots from Scott, Jeremy, Ethan and Fin, but saves and blocks denied Saints to the end. The game finished 3-3.
