Saints SW v North Somerset
Saints Southwest end North Somerset’s winning streak with point-saving goal of the season candidate.
Impressive and compact North Somerset came within 2 minutes of securing their sixth win of the season having taken the lead twice, but an inspired change of formation increased Saints attacking threat and led to Zack scoring what is surely a candidate for SSW Devon’s goal of the season, working a Maradona turn to beat the defender before calmly slotting an inch-perfect shot from a tight angle in off the post.
North Somerset started brightly, pressing hard and passing and moving well, generating a number of chances through quick and decisive attacks. Saints took a few minutes to settle in and find their rhythm, but soon created chances of their own and a brace of dangerous corners. Both defences worked hard to keep the opposing attackers at bay with the midfield battling to assert control on the game. The quarter ended 0-0.
With a change of personnel, Saints started the second quarter with a flurry of powerful efforts from the always dangerous debutant Amari. Further chances fell to both sides, with Henry holding several shots and the consistently excellent North Somerset keeper pulling off some great saves from open play and set pieces. Shots from Stevie, Amari, Toby and Zack were all held or palmed away to safety. A great strike from outside of the area from Patrick grazed the top of the bar and remarkably the quarter finished goalless with SSW left to rue missed opportunities that would have given them the lead and very likely with it a more comfortable game.
North Somerset opened the scoring in the third quarter, working the ball well down the left side, the resulting cross met with a powerful and composed side foot finish. Saints responded, upping the tempo and physicality. Amari finally got the goal his efforts deserved with a great strike on the half turn from the edge of box. North Somerset fought back hard, with quick and well organised pressing forcing Saints to sit very deep and, for a time, struggle to get out of their own half. Loose passes followed and the away team’s pressure contributed significantly to an otherwise unlucky Saints own goal to make it 2-1.
The first few minutes of the final quarter started well for North Somerset with a free kick and several shots on target, but an inspired change in formation sacrificing the CDM for a second striker brought Saints back into the game. The more attacking formation kept the away defence busy, forcing their keeper into a string of excellent saves. With Saints pressure building Toby unleashed a great strike only to see it come back off the bar. Saints pushed on determinedly looked for an opening against an always tight North Somerset defence. With time running out, Zack executed a Maradona turn to perfection to beat his defender out on the left wing before cutting in and slotting in off the post from the tightest of angles, triggering wild applause and securing the draw at 2-2.
Well done to both teams, quality and spirit on both sides created a closely fought good game of football.
Best of luck to a strong North Somerset side for the rest of the season.
