SSW v Taunton
Saints Southwest Devon vs Taunton Town
Saturday 18th January 2020, Torquay Academy 3G.
A determined display from Taunton Town saw the visitors take all three points in a closely fought match.
Once the low winter sun had cleared the frost, the crowd were entertained with 80 minutes of hard fought football, well organised defending, great skills, accurate passing, bursting runs and four well taken goals.
Saints kicked off and started with intent, good tempo and an egerness to retain possession and move the ball quickly. Their reward was winning the first corner well taken by Ali, 1 minute in. Once in possession Taunton Town looked dangerous, also moving well and passing with purpose. The first 10 minutes saw corners at both ends and shots from Noah and Ethan falling wide or well blocked. As Taunton settled into the game Saints struggled to find their rhythm, playing nicely from the back but failing to find a route through the midfield, forcing passes a little and losing possession. Taunton were unlucky not to take the lead at the 15 minute mark with their number 14 crashing a great freekick off the home teams bar. But with a minute remaining of the quarter, Taunton’s pressure paid off, taking the lead from their 3rd free kick on the edge of the area. Saints responded quickly with a great ball from Toby to Zack, who battled fiercly but was kept out by the Taunton defence. The quarter finished 1-0 to the away side.
Taunton Town came into the second quarter looking confident. A well controlled and powerful strike early in the quarter saw them extend their lead to 2 goals. Saints responded with better quality on the ball and good combination play between the midfield and wings. Battling from Fin and a quick 1-2 culminated in a strike from Charlie which was unlucky to come back off the inside of the post! Solid defending from Taunton helped them to maintain their 2 goal lead under increasing pressure from Saints. Midway through the quarter Saints looked to be coming back into the game with a freekick, header from stevie and shots and half chances for Ollie, Fin, Stevie and Harry blocked or well saved. Searching for a goal, Saints pressed high and were almost caught on the break, but Jasper tracked the run well and dealt with the danger. The quarter ended 2-0 to Taunton.
Saints went into the 3rd quarter with a change of formation, moving to 3 at the back, releasing the wingers to push further forward and join the attack. The midfield also responded, with a number of well timed searching crossfield and throughballs from Ollie and Harry meeting great runs from Ethan and Zack. The change in approach saw a crossfield ball from Noah reach a battling run from Ethan who cut a ball inside to Toby setting Fin to strike the ball into the roof of the net and bring Saints back into the game! Both teams battled well, and for a period Saints were on top, crossfield through balls and great runs giving a number of shooting opportunities to Toby, Ethan, Harry and Zack, but good defending from the away team – in particular their number 5 kept Taunton in front.
With a change in personnel for the final quarter, and Saints having finished the last one on the up, it looked as though a draw might be on the cards, but Taunton started with great tempo, battling for every ball and recovering possession quickly- a sliding tackle from Jasper and clearance header from Stevie keeping the game just within reach for Saints. For a period the game was end to end with great attacking runs and defensive tackles from both sides – including a decisive tackle from Ali on the wing. With the quarter drawing to a close shots from Ethan and Toby and headers from Stevie and Zack were blocked or saved. Taunton also broke twice, the first attempt well saved from Henry but with seconds to go Taunton Town’s number 16 received the ball unmarked just inside the Saints area and while Henry came out to close the angles the away player slotted home to seal a deserved 3-1 win.
In summary a great game of football, great passing and possession play, with some excellent footwork on display. All 4 goals were well taken as well as the woodwork getting in the way on a couple of occasions. Taunton’s desire and battling, coupled with three great finishes making the difference on the day.
Thank you to the ref and linesmen and good luck to Taunton Town for the rest of the season.
