Match Report

Chorley FC vs River Juniors

A good point today in the JPL for the U13's against a very good and well organised River juniors team.

Chorley FC vs River Juniors

9 November 2019

After a nervous start from both sides, Chorley FC started to find their rhythm and put on a solid team performance. With excellent crosses from Hayden Frawley all game, and precise passing between Cobain O’Brien and Charlie Westwell, it was Ryan Smith who had the first shot on target, which was unfortunately caught by the opposition’s keeper. Trae Sangwa and Joe Welsby connected brilliantly with strong passes and movement, and Matt Fairbrother commanded the left back with excellent blocks and defensive work. But it was River Juniors who scored first within the first twenty minutes. Undeterred, Chorley increased the pressure in the second quarter, with Oliver Lightfoot displaying exceptionally quick feet to win many midfield battles. Calm clearances from the captain, Eddie Clitherow, brought much needed stability, and the pace of James McManus once again rattled the opposition, with his attempt on goal unfortunately saved. The Chorley boys pressed hard and great movement from Charley Evans in midfield brought the ball to Ashton Dewhurst, whose strong strike put the ball firmly in the back of the opposition’s goal for Chorley to draw level at half-time. The third quarter saw River Juniors pressing from the start and Chorley goalie Connor Edwards demonstrated unwavering courage throughout the match, meeting the ball on attack. Charlie Crook proved invaluable all game with his defensive blocks and brilliant runs, and a handball in front of the opposition’s goal saw Chorley awarded a penalty, which Charley Evans took superbly, putting Chorley ahead. But the River Juniors counterattack came quick and within minutes a goal was conceded to make it 2-2. As the minutes counted down, the Chorley boys were unrelentless in driving the ball forward, looking for the winning goal. A great turn and pass from Charlie Westwell delivered the ball into the box, but the shot by Ryan Smith was caught by the keeper and River Juniors retaliated quickly, applying pressure in the Chorley half, which was thankfully dealt with by the safe hands of Connor Edwards just before the final whistle.

Full time 2-2
