Closely contested game offers fine viewing for the neutral observers.
A keenly contested match saw honours even in a windswept morning in the Vale of Evesham. The hosts were slow out of the blocks, and conceded an early goal after 4 minutes when they failed to deal with a corner. The ball was swung in, and found its way across the six yard box, where it was prodded home for an early lead. This buoyed the visiting team and Evesham were forced onto the back foot as South Glos. turned up the pressure. With the wind in their faces, the home team struggled to repel the early onslaught and fell further behind after 9 minutes. A clever ball from midfield bissected the centre back pairing, and the away forward ran on to slot home. Evesham continued to huff and puff and a fine flowing move saw a fine save from the visiting goalkeeper keep out a Ben G header. South Glos. continued to press and the hosts were having to compete to stay in the game. They were happy to hear the whistle for the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw a more alert Evesham match their visitors, and with the wind continuing to blow into their faces, it was clear that a two goal advantage for the visitors at the turn around would not be insurmountable. A closely matched quarter saw few chances, as the midfields battled to gain supremacy. At half time Evesham remained two goals behind, but South Glos. knew the game was still up for grabs.
The third quarter saw an early response for the hosts as they scored 1 minute into the half. A ball through the middle of the park was pounced on by Ben G, who calmly slotted past the goalkeeper. Evesham turned the screw, but South Glos. continued to look threatening, and there were no further goals despite a few half chances for both sides.
The fourth quarter saw Evesham continue to press for an equaliser, with South Glos. looking dangerous through the middle of the park. The teams continues to trade blows, and after 8 minutes a long ball was chased down, and as it bounced up it hit a South Glos. hand in the area, resulting in a penalty. In the spotlight, Jake B stepped up and hammered the ball home to bring the scores level.
With 12 minutes left, neither team seemed content to share the points, and both continued to push for a winner. However, both defences managed to hold out as the game opened up, and the final whistle blew for a well contested score draw.
Good luck to South Gloucestershire RTC for the remainder of the season.
