South Glos v North Somerset
Today saw the first game this season between the divisions top 2 teams in atrocious conditions due to storm Dennis at the Lockleaze sports centre, South Glos unbeaten and North Somerset with only one defeat.
North Somerset with the wind behind them started strong and had a chance after 3 minutes but shot wide of the goal but South Glos responded after 8 minutes when a pass from Jake found Mitch but his shot sailed over the bar. Both sides were having difficulties with the wind as North Somerset were over hitting the ball and South Glos struggling to get the ball forward but it was the away side with 2 quick attempts who looked the most likely to score but both shots, one a free kick from the edge of the box, were again to high to test the South Glos keeper. Kacper had the last attempt of the 1st quarter for South Glos but his shot was easily saved by the North Somerset keeper and it finished 0 - 0 at the first break.
The wind seemed to get strengthen as the 2nd quarter started and it was South Glos who started stronger and a free kick after 3 minutes taken by Jake again went high over the bar. It took a brilliant tackle from a North Somerset defender after 10 minutes to stop a shot from Luke as he found himself in a good position but was unable to get his shot away and from the resulting counter attack a North Somerset forward powered into the box but with only the keeper to beat dragged his shot just wide. Again North Somerset attacked South Glos and it took a brilliant save from Jamie in the South Glos goal to keep the score level North Somerset had another clear chance on goal. After 15 minutes South Glos had the last attempt of the 2nd quarter when Luke went around the keeper but went a bit too wide and his shot found the side netting all be it against the run of play and it was 0 - 0 at half time.
It was now South Glos with the wind behind them and 2 minutes into the 3rd quarter a Kacper free kick was headed narrowly over the bar from Aaron. A North Somerset corner after 7 minutes saw the first goal scored when a close range shot found the net to give them a deserved lead. It was nearly 2 - 0 after 11 minutes when a through ball got deflected to North Somerset forward who shot wide when he should have scored. South Glos were trying hard to find a goal but a shot by Mitch after 15 minutes lacked power and was easily saved. North Somerset made it 2 - 0 after 18 minutes when a misplaced pass by South Glos was intercepted by the North Somerset midfield and although the South Glos keeper got a hand to the ball he was unable to prevent it from going into the net. South Glos pulled a goal back from a minute later when Kacper caused the North Somerset keeper to miskick to Luke who shot into an empty net. A minute later North Somerset restored their 2 goal advantage when a mistake in the South Glos Defence allowed them an easy shot on goal.
North Somerset were dominating the game and it was 4 - 1 after just 1 minute of the 4th quarter when a low cross into the box evaded the defence, the keeper couldnt get a hand to the ball and it fell to North Somerset for an easy tap into an empty net. South Glos continued to try and get the ball forward and had chances but with their unbeaten run coming to an end it looked like a few heads were dropping. An attempt from Pietro after 16 minutes was too high and a difficult chance from George went just wide. North Somerset had the last attempt of the game when a long distance shot smashed against the bar and was cleared.
The referee blew the whistle for full time and a well deserved victory for North Somerset who coped better with the dreadful weather and controlled the game through their midfield. Both sides now with the same record of 1 defeat this season and the rematch at the home of North Somerset will be an exiting game to look forward to. South Glos wish the North Somerset players, coaches and parents all the best for the rest of their season. A special mention to the few hardy parents of both sides who braved the elements and stood outside and support both teams. Well done to you all, we are either very brave or very stupid.
