South Glos v Shortwood
South Glos welcomed Shortwood to the Lockleaze sports centre for todays JPL under 15 game on a cold overcast morning. It was South Glos who started the stronger with their quick passing game and Shortwood struggling to get the ball off of them. Two early attempts from Kacper and Lewis both went wide, then two good balls into the box were just too high for the South Glos forwards to get their heads to the ball. The first shot on target came from South Glos and Luke Bence on 12 minutes but his attempt was straight at the Shortwood keeper who saved easily. Shortwood were forced to make a substitution when a player looked to pick up an ankle injury from a tackle and we wish him well in his recovery. On 19 minutes Shortwood had their first shot on goal which forced the South Glos keeper to save well down low to his left and the quarter ended 0 - 0.
South Glos continued to pressure the Shortwood defence in the 2nd quarter with a Kacper shot going wide and a James Curry attempt going high from a difficult bouncing ball but it was Shortwood who scored the first goal against the run of play from a direct free kick when their number 6 fired the ball into the top right corner giving the keeper no chance to save after 12 minutes. South Glos equalised when a Joe Meredith free kick wide on the left was launched into the box but the Shortwood keeper misjudged the flight of the ball and it squirmed through his arms and into the net on 18 minutes. South Glos could consider themselves lucky to be level at half time due to the nature of their goal but would probably say it was fair due to the possesion and attempts on goal they had but they need to start converting attempts into goals.
The 3rd quarter saw Shortwood retake the lead when a powerful run from their number 10 through the South Glos midfield saw him shoot past the South Glos keeper after 12 minutes but this was short lived as a James Curry tapped in an equaliser from close range just 2 minutes later. It was now end to end football and Shortwood should have regained the lead a minute later but although their forward was through on goal, Jamie in the South Glos goal stood his ground and saved with his legs and the ball was cleared. Within another minute South Glos took the lead for the first time when good hold up play from Carwyn in the Shortwood penalty area brought George Slade into play and his pinpoint cross back into the box was poked in by Theo Clayson after 15 minutes. A good run by George into the box saw his shot deflected for a corner from which South Glos scored a 4th goal when unfortunately the Shortwood keeper dropped the ball and Archie Davis scored to make it 4 - 2 after the 3rd quarter.
South Glos kicked off the final quarter with a direct shot at goal which the keeper pushed away for a corner and from the corner a firm header from Aaron Hart was brilliantly saved by the Shortwood number 1. On 3 minutes a good move down the right hand side from South Glos by Carwyn and Theo saw Theo find the back of the net. It was hard to say if this was a shot or a cross or whether the Shortwood keeper was unsighted but South Glos were happy to score a 5th goal. Shortwood continued to try and play their way through the South Glos defence and it took a well timed tackle by Mitch Davies in the South Glos penalty area to thwart a good Shortwood move and it was Shortwood with the last attempt of the game but a shot from number 17 went just high over the bar and the game ended with a 5 - 2 victory for South Glos.
South Glos would like to thank the Shortwood players and coaches and parents for their contribution to a really good game of football today and wish them all the best for the rest of their season.
