Match Report

Gornal Athletic v Stoke RTC

Gornal switched this JPL league match to their training ground to ensure the match was played at the 4G weather, Garden Walk having suffered of late with the storms.

This would be a dress rehearsal for the two sides who face off again next week in the JPL shield quarter finals.

The weather dis its best to spoil the fixture with high gusting winds and occasional sideways rain. In truth Gornal set about the task very well. They had four glorious opportunities in the opening twenty minutes that they either squandered or forced good saves from Stokes GK.

Stoke kept the ball nicely and moved the ball around, Gornal were compact and organised and proved hard to break down. The deadlock was broken on 29 minutes, and in some fashion. Gornal were awarded a free kick fully 35/40 yard out and to the right side of the Stoke half. Jim stepped up, and with a favourable wind with him nagnificently rocketed a bullet of a wonder free kick straight into the top left hand corner of the Stoke net. It was unstoppable. 1-0. The score remained this way to the break.

Into the second half and Sroke now had the gusty wind behind them, the heavens opened to form shocking playing conditions. Creit to both sides who got the football on the floor and continued to play. Gornal then had another effort cleared off the line and Stokes GK recovered to pull off a save after Woody initially took the ball around him. Jim then hit the post. Stoke were still in the match and continued to prod and probe around the Gornal third but didn't carve open a guilt edged opportunity. Gornal appeared to break the Stoke spirit with seven left to play when Jim picked up the ball centrally, a quick turn brought him onto his left foot out outside the Stoke box. A strong drive across the GK, who got both hands to it, ended up nestled in the side of the Stoke goal. 2-0 Gornal. With Stoke fading Gornals tails were up and Harding caused some issues on 77 minutesfor the Stoke back line with his strength and pace. He barracked his way into the box from a throw and squared the ball to advancing Zaine to tap home from close range. 3-0 Gornal

Full time 3-0. A compelling match that the two sides will do again in seven days. Thanks to Oz and his boys, see them next Saturday!
